Premier Lesson 10: About Success
Dear Valued Leaders,
So this is it: the last lesson in our keys to success series. By now, I hope you know that success is neither magical nor mysterious; but instead, it is a series of correct choices executed with commitment and consistency.
This series shares my Top 10 choices to set you on the path to success. From here, it’s just a matter of doing the work. And by work, I mean, really go to work on yourself. You are worth this effort.
1. Lead by Example
In life, and in business, you will get much further if you can inspire others to join your cause. Motivated by a fire within, volunteers willingly work toward a shared purpose, and give of themselves not just for personal gain, but for the greater good.
This is who you want to work with! And any volunteer army is only inspired by what they see. Your success depends on others’ mirroring your efforts. So now is the time to look in the mirror and check out the reflection that others see. If you don’t like it – change it – starting today.
2. Have an Urgent State of Mind
Urgency is not a panic, or flurry of aimless activity. It is purposeful desire: to achieve what you want out of life; with focusing your every waking moment on action steps that get you closer to what you want.
You have to see your goal, you have to feel your goal, and you have to take sustained action to create momentum.
It may be a couple of days, weeks, or months; heck it could even be a couple of years. But aren’t your dreams worth it? Isn’t living life on your own terms and building a legacy for your family worth it? The difference between good versus great is the difference between what you can achieve when you choose to live urgently and what you’ll settle for when you don’t.
3. Always Know the Next Step
Success is a plan well executed. And a plan is simply a series of steps in the right direction. Consistency in your steps will make activity become second-nature to you and easily embraced by the novice who learns by watching you.
The next step is always the most important.
4. Be a Great Storyteller
A good story is always evolving to meet the emotional needs of the listener. Your story should be focused and simple. And really, when you speak from your heart, you’ll find that it really isn’t all that complicated.
To make an emotional connection with your prospect, all you need to do is ask a few simple questions. Then just listen. And I mean really listen; pay attention, instead of waiting to talk. That alone opens the door to trust; the foundation of a strong relationship.
5. Follow your Roadmap
Your roadmap is a step-by-step plan of activity in order to reach your goals. Your map will be much clearer to you as soon as you put it on paper. Physically write down and carve out time for each activity. And then, follow your map.
There is no simple answer to motivation, to keeping you focused on your map. Motivation is self-directed; stemming from deep within you. Making a habit of your key activities will help sustain and keep you motivated. It’s like Zig Ziglar says, “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going. People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”
6. Keep Perspective
If you want a piece, any piece, large or small, of this $100 billion dollar market, you have to invest in yourself and your dreams. There is no real business that does not have “some” cost associated with it. The important thing is to make sure the return on your investment is rewarding.
Don’t lose sight of the bigger picture. Balance the low cost of sharing Chava with the high reward that comes from achieving your dreams.
7. Talk about Money
Building a big business means developing your skills, particularly in explaining how the plan works. It’s not about the ins-and-outs of the compensation plan (unless they ask). It’s about REAL world and REAL life.
If you want people to see the opportunity before them with Waiora, then you have to use examples they can relate to. They need to be able see themselves in the picture.
8. Get New Members Started Right
This is not the time to be commitment-shy. The moment after they say “yes” is the moment to act! What’s important is to listen to your Member and keep the relationship moving, following the Evaluation Pack system.
If someone can’t do Premier and can do PaceSetter, get them started as PaceSetter. If someone just wants the product for personal use, get them started as a Basic. The only way to lose is not to start.
The key here is not the precision of your actions, rather the pace and urgency. It’s not about getting everything right; it is about creating the right momentum.
9. Stay Connected
Failure to engage with your team on a consistent basis can result in a stop-and-start cycle that can leave you standing still. The good news is that reaching out little and often is most effective.
In reality, there is no getting lucky. It is the right activity that generates results. And staying connected to that activity – offering your support, answering questions, encouraging and recognizing your team’s efforts – will generate the best results.
10. Success is a Journey
I was asked how I define success. Success is a journey, not a destination. It’s about getting stronger while maintaining humility and appreciation. Success is not a static state, nor does it cater to complaint, blame, complacency or ego.
You don’t achieve success; you perpetuate it through personal and professional growth. Keep going, never settle for mediocrity. It’s a challenge; but if you embrace it, success will follow.
There are no guarantees, but I can promise you this. Whatever you do or whatever you don’t, you will become one thing or another – either by direction or default. Don’t settle for something less than you are capable of. You can do this.
To your success,
